About the Artist

Nirmala Singh is a self taught artist and comes from a rare breed of artists who can express themselves in colours as well as in words. She is a poet as well as a painter, who paints her own poems and displays them both together in her shows. This allows a reader/viewer to not only grasp the feelings and motivation of the artist behind the painting but also allows him/her to grasp the emotions. Although she enjoys painting in oil, water colour and in photographic inks and other mediums but her signature style remains encaustic. In her present show at ICCR Azad Bhawan Gallery majority of the works displayed are encaustic with a few of other mediums also. In India very few artists use this method of painting as it s laborious, time consuming and requires patience and use oh heated instruments and melting and evaporation of wax.

She has so far held about 18 solo shows all over India and participated in a number of group shows and workshops. Her show of painting of Nivedita Joshi’s poems was inaugurated by the then prime minister Shri Atal Bhari Bajpayee in 1999 in Lalit Kala Academy. Shri Gulzar was the chief guest in two of her shows in Allahabad and in Kolkatta. She has exhibited her paintings in lalit Kala Academy, Jawahar Kala Kendra ,Rabindra  Bhawan, SCZCC,  NCZCC, Jodh art gallery, IndusInd Art Gallery, Punjab Kala Bhawan, India Hbitat Centre, just to name a few. Her paintings are in state museums in India as well as a number of private collections in USA, Australia, Malaysia and Singapore
