ICCR represents the region which is extraordinarily rich with distinct type of ancient cultural heritage with its historical monuments, archaeological sites, traditional arts, sculpture, painting, dance and music and literature. Odisha or the ancient Kalinga played a very conspicuous and vital role in the cultural matrix of Indian civilization. The culture of Odisha has three-tiered structure with interfaces and interpolation, the tribal/ethnic, the folk/peasant and the urban/classical which existed side by side enriching and enlarging the cultural dimensions. The Lingaraja temple at Bhubaneswar, Sri Jagannath temple at Puri and the Sun temple at Konark are the World’s finest architectural heritage. Similarly, the Jaina caves of Udayagiri and Khandagiri and the Buddhist Viharas and Stupas of Lalitagiri, Udayagiri and Ratnagiri are the unique landmarks of Odisha. Adi Shankaracharya, in the 9th century, made Puri a Center of his spiritual ideology & message, and established the Govardhan Pitha there. Another great saint, Ramanujacharya, the propounder of Visistadwaita philosophy also established the Emar Matha in Puri. In the same century, Jayadev composed his extraordinary poem, the Gita Govinda. Subsequently, in the 16th century, Sri Chaitanya, the passionate exponent of the Bhakti Cult, came to Odisha and made Puri his abode for the last eighteen years of his life. The Odissi dance is the typical classical dance form of Odisha and has its origin in the temples which exposes the love theme of Radha and Krishna. The Mahari dance (limb linking service of the Sri Jagannath), Chhau dance, Jatras are also the distinct folk culture of Odisha. It is this heritage as well as the unique economic and cultural energy of modern-day Odisha that ICCR's Bhubaneswar Office represents
