Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Durban, South Africa

Swami Vivekanand Cultural Centre in Durban, South Africa is a Cultural Centre of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations of India (ICCR). It started its activities in 1996 as a part of Consulate General of India, Durban.

The Centre promotes bilateral cultural linkages between India and South Africa by organizing cultural programmes, cultural seminars, workshops and trainings engaging India based Gurus professionals and trainers for Yoga, Tamil language, Bharatanatyam dance & Carnatic Vocal Music. It also conducts Yoga Classes under its outreach programmes at Ramakrishna Centre of South Africa, Durban and Chamber of Commerce and Rippon Primary School, Durban. Also, the local music schools & religious organisations are encouraged to learn and promote Indian dance forms & music and for this SVCC provide musical instruments to deserving

The Centre looks at complementing & supplementing the efforts already being made by organisations in the provinces of Kwa Zulu Natal, Eastern Cape & Free State to promote Culture.

The library of the SVCC, Consulate General of India, Durban has a large collection of books on Indian History, Politics, Economy, Art, Culture, Cuisine & other related topics. It has an extensive collection of Contemporary Indian Literature. It also has a fairly large collection of CD's on Indian Music & Films. The Library collection is partially computerised.

The centre celebrates various programmes such as; Indian National days (i.e. 15 August, Independence Day and 26th January Republic Day), Special days (Gandhi Jayanti, Sardar Patel Jayanti and Constitution Day etc), International Yoga Day and Indian festivals. The centre also supports the programmes celebrated by the community at different places in Kwazulu Natal, Eastern Cape, Free State and have made an alliance with local dance schools that formed an umbrella organisation – SAIDA (South African Indian Dance Alliance).

The multi-purpose Hall at the SVCC, Consulate General of India, Durban is available for Exhibitions, Lectures and various cultural activities.

The centre coordinates for offering ICCR Scholarships to deserving South African nationals in various disciplines at esteemed Universities all over India. A large number of students who have successfully graduated under ICCR Scholarship are well employed in large companies & IT firms.
