Indian Chairs Abroad
INDIAN COUNCIL FOR CULTURAL RELATIONS CHAIR SECTION
Since the 70’s, ICCR, in consultation with Indian Missions abroad, establishes Chairs of Indian Studies(Political Science, Philosophy, History, Sociology, Economics, Buddhist Studies & Law) & Indian Languages (Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu & Tamil) in different foreign universities/ institutes across the globe. The Chairs are based on signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cost-sharing(40:60), Standard(84:16) or Fully Funded(90:10) pattern. The objective is to generate intent & interest in India amongst foreign students. The Chairs are set up in pursuance of the long-term goal of creating greater understanding and awareness about India and Indian Civilization amongst the global community of academician and thinkers. These Chairs are deputed for a period of one semester, academic year and two years(extendable further on mutual consent) and are called short-term/ long-term Chairs. Indian faculties deputed to these Chairs not only teach courses on various aspects of India from Politics / Economy to Society & Culture, but through other academic activities like guidance research, conduct seminars and co-ordinations, publications, delivering public lectures, generate scholarly interactions with the academics of that country as well as students and assist in disseminating information on India and in creating a better appreciation of various India related issues.
