The Tagore Centre, a hub for Indian culture in the heart of Berlin, has completed its 20 years of journey in showcasing the cultural heritage of India in Germany. Named after Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, the Centre is committed to propound his task of inspiring Germany through invaluable treasures of Indian culture.
The Centre was inaugurated by Prime Minister of India, Shri P.V. Narasimha Rao on February 5, 1994, with a mandate to foster and strengthen cultural relations between India and Germany.
The Centre has a modern auditorium, which has hosted several dignitaries including high profile artistes, celebrated authors and internationally acclaimed scholars from India and Europe. The foyer at the entrance of the auditorium provides a good ambiance for exhibitions and has displayed works of many talented contemporary artists.
The two prestigious awards instituted by ICCR - Gisela Bonn Award and Saraswati Sanskrit Prize – are being managed by the Centre. In recent years, focus is being given on to revive Indology and India studies in Germany. Three ICCR sponsored long-term India studies chairs have been commenced at Göttingen, Heidelberg and Leipzig. Additionally, five short-term chairs are also being implemented every year to support the India-related studies at prominent German universities.
The Dr. Zakir Husain Library – a part of the Tagore Centre – has a rich collection of books by great Indian leaders, writers, philosophers, social scientists, historians and linguists. The core collection includes books by well-known Indian luminaries like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rabindranath Tagore on varied subjects such as Indian arts, culture, history, philosophy, religion, literature, politics and foreign policy of India.
